This annual event began in 2006 as a way to unite people all across the globe against rabies and to raise awareness about the seriousness of the disease in humans and animals. Though it is relatively uncommon in the US, over 50,000 humans, and perhaps even more animals, die from rabies each year - especially in Asia and Africa. The worst part is that the disease is so easily prevented. According to the World Rabies Day initiative, "the tools and technology for human rabies prevention and dog rabies elimination are available." We just need to work together to fight the disease.

Have you done your part to prevent rabies? It may seem like small potatoes compared to worldwide rabies issues, but simply vaccinating our dogs, keeping them healthy, and reporting animals that are suspicious for rabies you are helping to keep the world that much safer. Rabies vaccination is absolutely essential, and fortunately certain vaccines can be given every three years. So, if you are concerned about over-vaccinating your dog, this is a great option. Plus, if your dog is ever bitten by a rabies suspect, you should not have to worry about mandatory euthanasia (which is required in most areas when not vaccinated animals are bitten).

About.com Dogs: Dalmatian

Seeing a Dalmatian, the first thing that comes into one’s mind would likely to say lovely spots, firehouse mascots or Disney's 101 Dalmatians. The latter resulted in a rise of demand for the breed among families with children. Ironically, because of the breed’s highly active nature, it is not necessarily ideal for smaller kids. However, proper training and socialization can make a huge difference. Dalmatians are often wrongly labeled as daffy, hyperactive and uncontrollable. This behavior, if seen, is probably due to lack of fitting exercise or training. Make no mistake, owning a Dalmatian takes dedication. When raised well, the breed makes an admirably noble and devoted sidekick.
Interested in this breed? Learn more about Dalmatians and decide if this spotted beauty is the one for you.
As the old saying goes, "curiosity killed the cat". But when it comes to skunks, curiosity tends to make dogs stink. All too many of us knows how the battle of dog vs. skunk turns out. . . it ends badly - and smelly. If your dog is among the many that have been sprayed by skunks, then you know what I am talking about. If not, I am sure you can imagine. So, what do you do when your dog comes home stinking of skunk? There are so many home remedies out there, and a few products on the market, but most of them don't do the trick. Tomato juice simply leaves you with a slightly less smelly pinkish-colored dog. Vinegar helps sometimes, but not enough.

Fortunately, there is a great way to de-skunk that curious dog of yours. A recipe created by chemist Paul Krebaum is, to date, the most effective method. It's all in the chemical reaction - it breaks up the oils and neutralizes the odor. There's much more to it, but I'm no chemist so I'll leave the explanation to the pros. Bottom line - if your dog is skunked, try this recipe. Then come back and let us know the results. Have you already used this method? If so, tell us how it turned out.

Dog's Characteristics

Dogs vary more in outward appearance than in anatomical structure. An adult dog may weigh 2 to 99 kg., depending on the breed, and range in height from 12.5 to 90 cm. at the shoulder. Other differences in conformation include length in leg; length in muzzle; size and attitude of ears; length, shape, and carriage of tail; and length, density, color, and character of hair.

The female, or bitch (not the human), reaches reproductive maturity between 7 to 18 months of age. the gestation period averages 62 to 63 days. An average litter consist of 3 to 6 puppies. Sightless at birth, puppies do not open their eyes until about the tenth day. They are generally weaned by the sixth week. A dog is full grown at the end of the second year, is old at 12, and seldom lives beyond the age of 20.

Dogs have long been mistakenly considered colorblind. While they are unable to differentiate colors ranging from greenish yellow though orange to red, recent studies have shown that they can distinguish between colors at opposing ends of the spectrum. A dog's most important sense, however, is that of smell. An adult dog has 42 teeth, including molars. to drink, a dog laps with its tongue. Dogs do not perspire; heat is dissipated though evaporation from the nose and footpads and from the tongue and respiratory tract(that is why they pant). The dog has a simple carnivore stomach but eats cooked vegetables and grain as well as meat.

Uses of Dogs

Dog used for mine clearing

The dog has been bred for many domestic purposes other than as a pet. Keen senses of hearing and smell have made the dogs valuable in hunting and tracking for guard, security, and search purposes. Dogs also herd livestock and serve as guide dogs for the blind, as sled dogs, and as racing dogs. Their positive effect on people is well documented; they have been used in programs for treating the mentally ill.

The dawn of a new breed

Although dogs have variable genetically based features, and members of a single litter may be born with the marked diversity, the variation in size, shape and color of domesticated dogs is almost entirely the result of artificial breeding and selection. The American Kennel Club recognizes 130 breeds, grouping them as sporting dogs, examples are pointers, setters and retrievers. We have the hounds, examples are bassets, bloodhounds and foxhounds. The working dogs, examples are boxers, malamutes and schnauzers. The terriers, which are bull, fox, Scottish as examples. The toys, example, the chihuahuas, pugs and Pomeranians. The non-sporting dogs, which are the bulldogs and dalmatians. And lastly the herding dogs, examples of this are the collies, sheepdogs and corgis. The American Kennel Club registers more than 1.2 million purebred puppies per year. In a recent year, the poodle and the cocker spaniel ranked highest in number of puppies registered. Mixed breed dogs are not eligible for registry. The British Kennel Club lists about 170 breeds; the Federation Cynologique Internationale, with 65 member countries, lists 335 breeds. In the United States the number of dogs, both purebred and mixed-breed, is variously estimated to range up to 50 million.

The Dog

The Canis Familiaris, the animal that we call the dog, of the family Canidae, is thought to have descended from a wolflike creature that said to have lived several million years ago. History suggests that the dog was one of the earliest of domesticated animals, having lived in close association with humans for approximately 10,000 years. No direct evidence exists to support a theory concerning the origin of the human-dog relationship. Because dogs often tend to be scavengers, it has been suggested that they adopted humans rather than the other way around.
